Start with a problem or purpose

Define what the object must do. A display model, fit-check prototype, flexible grip and functional enclosure lead to different design and material decisions.

Create or obtain a 3D model

Models can be designed in CAD, created with modelling software, produced from scan data or supplied by a designer. Confirm that you have permission to manufacture any file you use.

Export and check the file

STL and OBJ are common mesh formats; STEP and STP preserve CAD geometry. Confirm scale, closed geometry, wall thickness, holes, clearances and important features before quotation.

Choose process and material

Filament, resin and powder-based processes produce different surfaces, properties and workflows. Describe the outcome you need and compare options rather than selecting by popularity alone.

Prepare and print

Print-preparation software positions the model, creates layers and may add supports. Orientation influences surface appearance, support marks, time and mechanical behaviour.

Post-process and inspect

Depending on the process, parts may require support removal, washing, curing, depowdering, sanding, machining or painting. Inspection should relate to the features that matter for the intended use.
